Nelson Mandela Bust South Bank London - Ian Walters - bronze

Coate Stone Lion South Bank London

Situated on London's South Bank at the side of the Royal Festival Hall this is the second edition of this bust..

This original bust was made when Mandela was still in prison and was unveiled in 1985 by Oliver Tambo. I guess the sculptor Ian Walters worked from old photographs.

The original was destroyed by deliberate fire after about a year. The present version was re-erected in 1988 and placed higher on a plinth for safety which unfortunately makes it more remote - but it is a very powerful statement nevertheless.

The text at the top reads"the struggle is my life"
